All the Versions of Me

Moya

Nothing but a simple wooden framed cot and cherry-colored wardrobe lined my tiny tower lair. Surrounded by walls of three-foot thick stones carved from the river I tried to kill myself in recently, I stared at the ceiling.

Though for an ordinary witch, I suppose, the locks and bars of Elven steel Voli attempted to bind my magic with would be sufficient. Yet, they did not affect me at all.

A storm swirled above me, and a single white cloud of vapor reached out for my fingers. “Thank you, blessed Fates, for your mercy.”

Only in the mere presence of my mate, my powers doubled every second.

But since Fate made him my equal and opposite to balance us, his mighty will kept my powers dull with his infantile need to be near me constantly.

To find out what I was actually working with now when away from him, I needed a place of solitude to explore myself.

I’d been shutting out the magical part of me nearly all my life. Still, when I made my feet disappear, I let the dark sorcery consume me down to my bitty baby toe. “I humbly and wholeheartedly repent for my nation’s denial of you.”

The ancient power of my mother and her mother and her mother before her rose from those dormant places inside my head, stitching themselves to my soul. “Spirits of the above, I call on you to protect me and guide my right thoughts. Make me just and merciful when called upon to be so.”

The buzz of the unseen insects and tiny blades of grass that poked from beneath the castle in search of sunlight crept through my skin.

Choosing to anoint me with its wickedness, the black blood of the planet oozed from the walls when I laid my hand on the stone wall to welcome it. “Demons of the below, I call on you to make me quick and deadly like the viper. Make my vengeance swift and ruthless.”

Meant to imprison me, the fortress warbled under my fingers as the world bent around them. “I accept your gift, dear Father Mayhem, and will use it to the best of my ability.”

Every one of my senses instantly heightened to the point they made me quite unhinged, if I’m honest. Like my own heartbeat, Amber’s every step climbing toward me pulsed in my fingertips until the bolt unlocked with a thud.

I gave the twisted faces of my patrons on the ceiling a wiggle of my fingers as they withdrew into the rock. “I shall not disappoint you.”

The musty air followed her as she smiled around the corner and stepped inside. “Moya?”

With a handful of my things, Amber dipped her head at the guard as he closed the door behind her. Yet, that happiness fell away when she peeked around the other side of the armoire and didn’t find me. “Moya?”

Pausing at my dresser, she rocked side to side to recheck the corners, and when she still came up empty, she tapped her knuckle against the armoire door.
